Coffee. It’s the only place to be in the morning and at three in the afternoon on most days too. When it comes to the best coffee shops in Midtown, the good news is there are so many excellent choices that it would be hard to go wrong, no matter what direction you head in. This roundup of shops has ranked highest on our list for their superb quality coffee, friendly staff and cozy locations.

Design details like Victorian print wallpaper, original tattoo artwork and a crystal chandelier make Culture Espresso as much a destination as a cafe. But their premium coffees from Portland, Oregon’s, Heart Coffee Roasters will hit the spot regardless. Though the shop on 38th brings in baked goods from around the city like Magpies and Dough donuts, their house-made chocolate chips are the perfect coffee accompaniment.

Ten years ago Café Grumpy opened on a corner in Greenpoint, Brooklyn. Now the shop has its own roasters next door and seven locations around the city. Head to the shop on 39th street for a pour-over of seasonal coffees sourced from around the world.

Zibetto Espresso Bar is the artisanal Italian coffee bar of our dreams. Three Midtown locations have long marble bars, white walls and espresso crafted with beans roasted in Italy. Stand at the bar, order a caffe and pretend you’re at an outpost in Milano.

2 Beans on Park Avenue between 40th and 41st is the flagship location of this excellent café and confectionery. The “two beans” are coffee and chocolate naturally; also known as the kind we have never had a problem with. And though this may be one of the few places in Manhattan where you can pick up a traditional Indian Ladoo, what keeps us coming back is the expertly-prepared illy coffee.
