How to Travel by Taxi Like a New Yorker

NYC is famous for its 24-hour subway system, yes, but when it’s hot, rainy or if you’re just plain running late, getting to your destination by taxi is often the most hassle-free option. Whether you opt for one of NYC’s yellow cabs or an Uber, here’s how to tell your driver to get you to your destination—and sound like a local.

How to get to the Theater District from Midtown East

Travel time: 7 minutes without traffic, 13 minutes with moderate traffic

If you’re interested in seeing a classic Broadway show like Wicked at the Gershwin Theatre, don’t show up to the show hot and sweaty from the subway. The E train may offer easy access to the Theater District, but you want to arrive in style. There are several ways to get across town: any one-way street going west should do the trick. But you now know better—at one mile flat, driving to the west side via East 51st Street is the fastest route.

Directions from Hotel 48LEX New York:

  1. Head south on Lexington Ave. toward E. 48th St.
  2. Turn right onto E. 47th St.
  3. Turn right onto Madison Ave.
  4. Turn left onto E. 51st St.
  5. Arrive at the Gershwin Theatre

How to get to the Upper East Side from Midtown East

Travel time: 11 minutes without traffic, 19 minutes with moderate traffic

With over two million works of art in its permanent collection and a rooftop bar, The Metropolitan Museum of Art is one of the best ways to beat the heat this summer. Park Avenue may seem like the right choice to fly uptown—it is the widest avenue running through the Upper East Side, after all. But perhaps too many people had the same idea, as the street is typically congested throughout the day. Tell your driver to take Third Avenue instead and you’ll be sipping a cocktail over Central Park in no time.

Directions from Hotel 48LEX New York:

  1. Head east on E. 48th St. toward 3rd Ave.
  2. Turn left onto 3rd Ave.
  3. Turn left onto E. 72nd St.
  4. Turn right onto Madison Ave.
  5. Turn left onto E. 83rd St.
  6. Turn left onto 5th Ave.
  7. Arrive at the Metropolitan Museum of Art

How to get to the Financial District from Midtown East

Travel time: 15 minutes without traffic

Whether you have a meeting at the World Trade Center or are in need of a luxury shopping trip to Brookfield Place, don’t bother taking the local train downtown. Hop in a car—and don’t let the driver take you local, either. Ask to get on the FDR on East 42nd Street: without traffic, you’ll fly down Manhattan’s east-side highway and end up at the island’s southernmost tip in about 15 minutes without traffic.

Directions from Hotel 48LEX New York:

  1. Head southeast on E. 48th St. toward 3rd Ave.
  2. Turn right onto 2nd Ave.
  3. Turn left onto E. 42nd St.
  4. Merge onto FDR Drive
  5. Continue onto Battery Park Underpass
  6. Continue onto West St.
  7. Arrive at One World Trade Center
