Art Lovers’ Guide to Museums in NYC: Winter 2020 Edition

New York City is full of art, from downtown galleries to public sculptures and murals where you’d least expect them. But the biggest museums in NYC never fail to impress. Check out our handy guide to the absolute best art to see this winter.

“Rainforest V (variation 1) at the Museum of Modern Art

The new MoMA is finally here. After an extensive renovation, the Museum of Modern Art is now open. Its new, expanded galleries offer more space for exhibitions and its world-renowned permanent collection. Don’t miss “Rainforest V (variation 1)” by David Tudor and Composers Inside Electronics Inc. The sound installation, which was constructed using everyday objects, suspends items from the ceiling. By placing these items, such as meta barrels and plastic tubing, in space, their resonance increases.

On view: Through January 5, 2020

“Artistic License: Six Takes on the Guggenheim Collection” at The Guggenheim

This is The Guggenheim’s first artist-led curation. Five artists were asked to explore the museum’s collection — both famous works and pieces by lesser-known artists — and shape a collection of their own. Each collection is displayed on a different level of the museum’s famous rotunda, which was designed by famed architect Frank Lloyd Wright.

On view: Through January 12, 2020

“Order and Ornament: Roy Lichtenstein’s Entablatures” at The Whitney Museum of American Art

American pop artist Roy Lichtenstein (1923-1997) is famous for the cartoon-like images he created in the 1960s. In a departure from his more well-known works, this exhibit focuses on a series he created in the 1970s, which was inspired by the stunning facades of buildings found throughout lower Manhattan.

“In Praise of Painting: Dutch Masterpieces at The Met” at The Metropolitan Museum of Art
